NASHVILLE, Ind. – Amy For Africa marathoner Amy Compston captured the Dances With Dirt Gnaw Bone Trail Marathon on Saturday in record fashion.
The 29-year-old Compston was the top female finisher in 4 hours and 50 minutes, which also established a course record for the seven-year-old race. She finished behind only one other male marathoner who finished five minutes ahead of her.
Compston overtook Beth Zimffer of Michigan in the last mile of the race after trailing for the first 25 miles. This was the first trail marathon for Compston, who has twice run in the Boston Marathon and last November placed second in the Nashville Ultra 50-mile Marathon.
Her husband, Chris Compston, also competed in the Gnaw Bone Trail Marathon and finished 23rd overall in a time of 6 hours and 53 minutes. He was among the top five in his 30-35 age division. Chris is 35.
Husband and wife will be running together in five more marathons over the next five months. The next one will be June 15 in Williamson, W.Va., at the Hatfield-McCoy Marathon.
