ASHLAND, Ky. – It’s almost Boston Marathon time for Amy Compston and the Amy For Africa team.
We ask our friends, family and other supporters to remember us in pray this weekend as we visit Boston and proclaim God’s name on every corner. We want divine appointments.
Amy will be running in the marathon on Monday morning (probably starting around 10:30 a.m.) so if you can reserve some special prayer time then it would be much appreciated by Amy and her AFA team. We want God to be glorified in all that we do.
Chris Compston and Amanda Evans, Amy’s sister, will be running in the Boston 5K on Saturday morning at 8.
Here are a few interesting facts about the Boston Marathon and Amy For Africa:
-There were 25,654 applicants this year and room for only 22,679 of them. The Boston Athletic Association shaved the usual cutoffs by 1 minute and 38 seconds, the toughest standard in the marathon’s 118-year history.
-The previous qualifying time of 3:35 became 3:33.22. Amy ran the marathon in 3:28 last April. She qualified in both Myrtle Beach (2012) and Dayton (2012) prior to running her best marathon time in Boston.
-There will be 36,000 runners in all, 9,000 more than usual because of the 5,633 runners who didn’t get to finish last year that were invited to return. Also, several runners are participating as part of fundraising for victims in last year’s bombing. With the increase in runners, the 2014 marathon may come close to the current race record of 38,708 runners, set in 1996 for the marathon’s 100th anniversary.
-In 2014, athletes will be representing every state in the nation and more than 90 countries.
-This will be the first of eight marathons between April and November for Amy, who will also be running in two other world marathons, Chicago and New York City, in October and November respectively. Her husband, Chris, will be running in six marathons with her.
-Amy For Africa is coming upon its one-year anniversary as an organization and has raised more than $50,000 for missions in Moyo, Uganda. We are in the process of completing paperwork to become a 501 3c non-profit.
